This coloring and collage activity was created for the Skirball Cultural Center’s Visions and Values Program. The activity explores the inherent value in all beings and what we each carry with us. The activity uses coloring, collage, and mixed media to evoke memory, strengthen emotional well-being, and boost self-expression. The coloring sheets were illustrated by me and are an extension of the coloring and collage activities that I created for the public art project East Los Luv. Share your finished activity with me and I will add it to a virtual gallery! Email a good-quality photo of the completed artwork at Stephanie.x.mercado [at] gmail.com.

Creativity and Cultural Affirmation Coloring and Collage Activity

Latinx Heritage Month, Co-Create, Coloring and Collage Activity
I illustrated this activity in honor of Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) after being invited by the Variety Boys and Girls Club to teach a visual art workshop. The activity honors the creative production of the Latinx and Indigenous peoples by highlighting the beauty and labor of their textiles. Some of the designs reflect the traditional needlework and imagery of the Otomí’s embroidery known as Tanango. There are many ways to honor the contributions of Latinx’s that are thoughtful and intentional. These sheets include spaces for participants to add their own drawings or photos to personalize the experience and capture the variety and diversity within the Latinx experience. Participants can draw their favorite food on the blank plate, add their photograph within the frame provided, or draw their favorite book, comic, magazine, or words to live by on the blank book provided. Share this activity with your classroom or with anyone who needs to take a moment to be creative, meditate, and practice wellness.

I have been creating intentional coloring and collage activities to share with others in an effort to demystify the art-making process and encourage participants to take a moment to be creative. I believe creativity and self-reflection promote healing, wellness, and gratitude. This body of work has been made available to the public free of cost, and many of the workshops I hold are on a volunteer basis.

Additional coloring and collage activities can be found on Eastlosluv.com/resources. If you are interested in supporting this work, share the resources with your students, friends, and colleagues.
